“Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Illinois Association of County Veterans Assistance Commissions fervently opposes the NorthPoint Compass Project and recommends to all governmental bodies who have authority over the proposal to immediately terminate it,” the resolution said.
The group’s resolution is titled “Association’s Opposition to the Proposed NorthPoint Compass Project Near the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.”
Every county has an individual Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC). This association represents all of the State of Illinois Veterans Assistance Commissions.
“Be it further resolved that Illinois Association of County Veterans Assistance Commissions enjoins in the lawsuit brought forth opposing the North Point Compass Project at no charge to the Association;
Be if further resolved that Illinois Association of County Veterans Assistance Commissions request that its members disseminate this Resolution to governmental leaders at the local, state and federal levels.”
Here is the entire text of the resolution:
“Whereas, the Illinois Association of County Veterans Assistance Commissions’ members are tasked with providing for the welfare of the veterans of the State of Illinois; and
Whereas, as part of providing that welfare, members routinely refer veterans and their families for burial at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery; and
Whereas, the NorthPoint Compass Project is a proposed trucking depot to include an overpass over Illinois Route 53 at Walter Strawn Drive which would bring a massive amount of truck traffic within eyesight and earshot of the hallowed grounds of Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery; and
Whereas, the trucking industry has not been a good steward of the area and has been caught turning around inside of the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery on an almost daily basis and even been seen driving over graves of veterans and their family members; and
Whereas, the NorthPoint Compass Project would result in over 5,000 new trucks per day using Walter Strawn Drive which would nullify the serene environment at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery;
Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Illinois Association of County Veterans Assistance Commissions fervently opposes the NorthPoint Compass Project and recommends to all governmental bodies who have authority over the proposal to immediately terminate it; and
Be it further resolved that Illinois Association of County Veterans Assistance Commissions enjoins in the lawsuit brought forth opposing the NorthPoint Compass Project at no charge to the Association; and
Be if further resolved that Illinois Association of County Veterans Assistance Commissions request that its members disseminate this Resolution to governmental leaders at the local, state and federal levels.
Passed by the Board of Directors in Special Session on December 16, 2020.”
